In the past, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. However, silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable way.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to future generations.

In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks that cover the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
